SIGGRAPH 2018-AliceVision
There was so much good tech at this year's SIGGRAPH in Vancouver. The first thing project I wanted to talk about is AliceVision. My background as a photographer makes me very interested in bringing real world objects into the virtual world as accurately and quickly as possible. I imagine a day when I can take out my "camera" and get an accurate 3D model of my surroundings including textured objects and accurate room or environment data. Photogrammetry is going to be a important part of this.
At the SIGGRAPH talk I was impressed by Meshroom which is the GUI part of the AliceVision pipeline. The lion statue that they used as a walkthrough demo was very detailed and looked good to go with little point cloud manipulation or mesh tweaking. I'm definitely going to download this and give it a try on some existing photos.
