Notes on ongoing projects — builds, experiments, and things I'm learning.

This is part of my daily goals series on Unreal Engine. Today's goal is to get the Unreal VR template working in an existing project.

Step 1

Create a new project based on the VR Blueprints.

Open this project and migrate the VirtualReality and VirtualRealityBP folders to the existing project.

FastLED is a great library for working with RGB LEDs. It seems well thought out and supports the different formats (single pin, separate CLK and Data etc.) Most of the examples are pretty simple, in this case I need to drive at least two separate strands of different type. Here is a good rundown...

Unreal Engine is giving me a little trouble on Ubuntu 19. It seems the version of Mono has changed and even Git Master wasn't working.

This page gave the hint:

sed -i.bak "s/mono-dmcs/mono-mcs/;s/clang-3.9/clang-7/" Engine/Build/BatchFiles/Linux/Setup.sh

Which seems to be working. Hey Unreal...

It's that time of the year again to revisit the rack of LEDs. I did a little research on doing a straight shift register approach to control the standard blue LEDs. That would probably work fine, the main drawback is having to wire every light back to the control board. I think instead I will use AP...

I have another opportunity to use my LED control system. The requirements are fairly basic, 4 channels of RGB LED control, 32 enclosures with 6 LEDs in each, plus an interactive app running in Unreal Engine.

The 4 channels of RGB LED control should be straightforward, but I haven't found an off th...

The latest version of KrPano is out with a ton of new features. I'm especially excited about the support for depth maps, but also some intriguing stuff around synthetic depth maps, and also support to project images on imported geometry. Check out these examples

I'll definitely be trying some o...

Super interesting "band video" of some pretty crazy real time experiments

I like the creative use of depth map distortions in this video. I c...

How do we perceive depth? In theory it sounds easy, we have two eyes separated a certain distance that take two slightly different views on the world. But, if we think about it there are other depth queues that painters know about, and there are other depth queues that are built in to the geometry o...

I am interested in bringing live green screen shot footage into a UE4 environment.

To get a different image per eye use a lerp and a custom node:

Create a custom node in your material editor and add "return ResolvedView.StereoPassIndex; " (Note: output type should be Float1)

To get a mate...
